St. Andrew's
One of my songs that people consistently ask to hear. It expresses for me some of the anguish I've felt watching the struggles of the people caught in Katrina's path. Copyright 1994 Jennifer Jean Smith Words and Music by Jennifer Jean Smith

Adding Habitat for Humanity to my list...

There are so many causes worthy of donation that it's hard to decide on only a few.  I've been a regular contributor to The Salvation Army, St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for many years.  I also try to add in the Humane Society, Guide Dogs and the Hooved Animal Society whenever I can.  (Yes I love the critters).

This year I really wanted to participate in the Jimmy Carter Work Project which is part of Habitat for Humanity and took place this year in Michigan, but was unable to. So I decided that ten percent of any money I make from music, whether it be CD sales or payments for gigs, from now on, I will send to Habitat.  Seeing what has happened with the Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast I'm am really glad that I made the decision to start contributing to Habitat.  I started thinking about Habitat earlier this year when I saw a PBS special on President Carter.  The sight of him going to work on Habitat homes really moved me.  I thought, "What a wonderful thing for him to be doing post presidency.  Just digging in with his own two hands and giving help where it is needed."  President Carter's participation in Habitat has really bolstered the organization and in times when there just seems to be so much going wrong, it is inspirational to see people use their power and influence to do good for others.  Habitat for Humanity will be instrumental in helping to not only rebuild homes for the people affected by the hurricane but in continuing to provide safe affordable housing on an ongoing bases for people in need.  Additionally as I've researched different organizations Habitat for Humanity appears again and again as one of the most trustworthy and effective organizations.  I think it is really important to try to get our donations to the organizations that have learned how to use it most effectively and really get to the folks in the real world.
